Mechanical Engineer — Battery Cell & Module Development
Location: Pearl River, NY
Job Type: Full-time
UEP is seeking an entry- to mid-level Mechanical Engineer to join the Battery
Development team. This role focuses on the mechanical, structural, thermal, and
materials design of battery cells and modules, supporting the development and
commercialization of next-generation battery technologies.
The ideal candidate brings strong fundamentals in mechanical design, materials and
properties, CAD-based design, and engineering documentation, and thrives in a
collaborative R&D environment.
About Urban Electric Power
Urban Electric Power (UEP) is commercializing zinc anode rechargeable battery
technology developed at the City University of New York (CUNY) Energy Institute.
Made from environmentally sustainable materials used in disposable alkaline batteries,
UEP’s technology delivers enhanced performance, extended lifetime, and low cost.
Founded in 2012, UEP is headquartered at its pilot manufacturing and battery
testing facility in Pearl River, New York.
Key Responsibilities
Design and support mechanical, structural, and thermal aspects of battery
cells and modules, including cell housing, welding interfaces, and module
enclosures.
Develop and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings using industry-standard CAD
tools (e.g., SOLIDWORKS, Fusion, AutoCAD).
Apply materials and mechanical fundamentals to create robust,
manufacturable designs.
Collaborate with chemical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to
integrate mechanical designs into complete battery systems.
Create and maintain engineering documentation, including FMEAs,
specifications, datasheets, and revision-controlled drawings.
Support prototype builds, testing, design reviews, and iterative
improvements.
Qualifications
BS in mechanical engineering or related field.
0–5 years of experience in mechanical design or product development.
Proficiency creating production-ready CAD designs and drawings.
Strong understanding of materials, mechanical properties, and structural
design.
Experience with engineering documentation (FMEAs, specifications,
drawings).
Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
Preferred Qualifications
MS in mechanical engineering or related field.
Experience with battery cells, modules, or energy storage systems.
Familiarity with electrical drawings and PCB layouts.
Exposure to thermal or structural analysis tools.
