Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project Manager

Location: Pearl River, NY

Job Type: Full-time


The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and successful completion of Battery Energy Storage System projects from inception to commissioning. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in renewable energy projects, a deep understanding of energy storage technologies, and demonstrated experience in managing complex technical projects. The role requires coordinating cross-functional teams, managing project timelines and budgets, and ensuring that all project objectives are met within safety, quality, and regulatory standards.


About Urban Electric Power

Urban Electric Power (UEP) is commercializing zinc anode rechargeable battery technology developed at the City University of New York (CUNY) Energy Institute. Made from the same environmentally sustainable materials as disposable alkaline batteries, UEP batteries offer a unique combination of enhanced performance, extended lifetime, and low cost. Founded in 2012, UEP is headquartered at its pilot manufacturing and battery testing facility in Pearl River, New York.


Key Responsibilities

Project Planning Execution:

  • Develop comprehensive project plans, including scope, timeline, budget, risk management, and resource allocation.

  • Manage end-to-end project lifecycle, ensuring milestones and deliverables are met on time and within budget.

  • Coordinate site assessments, feasibility studies, permitting, and regulatory approvals.

  • Draft and submit deliverables related to project deployments, and generate documentation to support the related invoices for services rendered.

 

Team Leadership & Coordination:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams, including engineers, construction managers, procurement specialists, and contractors.

  • Foster collaboration between internal teams and external stakeholders such as suppliers, consultants, utilities, and government agencies.

 

Technical Oversight:

  • Oversee the design, engineering, procurement, and construction phases of BESS projects.

  • Ensure that technical specifications, safety standards, and quality controls are adhered to throughout the project.

 

Budget & Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage project budgets, costs, and report on financial performance.

  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and strategies to optimize project profitability.

 

Risk Management:

  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks related to project execution, safety, and compliance.

  • Develop contingency plans and manage changes in project scope, schedule, or budget.

  • Ensure all projects comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure safety best practices are implemented.

 

Reporting & Communication:

  • Provide regular project updates to senior management, stakeholders, and clients.

  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and solutions in a clear and concise manner.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in project management within the energy, power, or construction industry.

  • Proven experience managing BESS or renewable energy projects.

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) or similar certification preferred.


Skills & Attributes

  • Strong understanding of BESS technologies, grid integration, and power systems.

  • Knowledge of renewable energy industry standards and best practices.

  • Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera)

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to lead, influence, and motivate project teams.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience managing project budgets and financial analysis.

  • Understanding of contracts, procurement processes, and vendor management.

  • Continuous Improvement: Passionate about learning, innovation, and staying current on industry trends and best practices.


Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.

  • Valid driver’s license.
