Urban Electric Power’s rechargeable zinc battery technology provides a safe, reliable energy storage alternative. Our U.S.-developed technology has been validated through 12+ million hours of operational testing by industry leading partners (Godrej & Boyce, NYSERDA, Sandia National Laboratories, US Navy, CSA Group).


Originally founded at the City University of New York Energy Institute, where ARPA-E supported research transformed the traditional zinc manganese chemistry found in double AA cells into a powerful rechargeable alkaline battery for safe and affordable energy storage. The company has won consistent support from federal and state research agencies, evidencing the promise of rechargeable zinc battery chemistry for industry adoption. 

 

Our energy storage systems are now available for a variety of critical applications in the commercial and public sectors.

  • Proven track record of developing clean energy projects and programs, and leading teams across the public and private sectors.

  • MPA in Environmental Science and Policy, Columbia University.

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and senior researcher at CUNY Energy Institute since 2013-2018.

  • 7+ years of research experience on zinc manganese cells and lead inventor of the technology to access the full two-electron capacity of manganese dioxide cathodes commercialized by UEP.
